The Biotechnology Laboratory is operated by Alfred D. Lampazzi and Larry A. Gaudreault. Mr. Lampazzi teaches DNA Science I and DNA Science II, and he also serves as the laboratory instructor for students enrolled in the Mentorship Program. Mr. Gaudreault assists students working in the Senior Research class.

Alfred D. Lampazzi, Director

Fred Lampazzi has 28 years of teaching experience in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with the last 23 in the Fairfax County Public Schools system. As the director of the Biotechnology Laboratory at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Mr. Lampazzi implements and updates the school's innovative DNA Science I and II curriculum. These post-AP programs are designed to give students the necessary research skills for performing college-level molecular biology research. Mr. Lampazzi also oversees the senior biotechnology mentorship program. During Mr. Lampazzi's teaching career, he has also taught numerous Biology I and AP Biology classes.

Mr. Lampazzi is also responsible for the TJHSST Summer Biotechnology Institute. This three-week outreach program is designed for rising ninth graders. The program introduces some of the technologies used to enhance scientific research in the field of molecular biology. In addition, Mr. Lampazzi has given numerous national and local workshops for teachers in the areas of biotechnology and the uses of the graphing calculator in molecular biology. Mr. Lampazzi sees that educational outreach is an essential component of the laboratory. Without it, the program would lose much of its identity.

Mr. Lampazzi is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers where he is one of the co-authors of its Biotechnology Sourcebook publication.

Larry A. Gaudreault, Senior Research Instructor

Mr. Gaudreault has 35 years of experience in secondary education. As a biology teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology for 21 of those years, he has developed a reputation as a leader in his field. In addition to teaching ninth-grade Molecular Biology and AP Biology at Jefferson, Mr. Gaudreault has presented workshops at several National Association of Biology Teachers Conventions and hosted national satellite television conferences on "Coastal Ecology" and "Freshwater Streams."

In 1985, as the first department chair at TJHSST, he was instrumental in hiring staff, designing labs, and developing curriculum for the new school. He and his staff provided a strong science foundation as the new school experienced construction, renovation, and growth during its first four years of existence. Many of the curricular ideas initiated at Jefferson have since been implemented in other schools nationwide.

After being briefly retired in 1999 and 2000, Mr. Gaudreault now serves as the Biotechnology Laboratory's Senior Research Instructor. In this current role, he is the teacher of Jefferson's Biotechnology Senior Research program. Mr. Gaudreault also works as a consultant in the biological sciences, providing educational assistance. In fact, recently, he wrote lesson plans for David Attenborough's series "Life of Birds" that aired on PBS in Fall 2000.
