Volunteers for the core program must be able to work with the program almost every Wednesday night and Saturday. Some other volunteer opportunities are available on an ad hoc basis. Programs seeks 13-19 year olds who are interested in using their ideas and creativity to promote community change. They accept young people with a wide range of academic achievement, personal histories, levels of artistic training and leadership skills. Auditions for its 2009-10 program were held on 9/19/2009, Additional auditions will be held in the Spring and Summer. Students must audition (sing and dance) and fill out a questionnaire. No preparation necessary for the audtion. Come in comfortable clothes and plan to be there about 1 & 1/2 hours. |

George Mason University has partnered with FastWeb in sponsoring this prestigious annual event. Participants in this intensive academic program receive college credit from Mason while interacting w/ some of the leading figures in the fields of journalism and media. The conference will educate and inspire young leaders from across the country through once-in-a-lifetime experiences designed to provide an accurate understanding of careers in this field. This week-long residential program will focus on key issues for journalism, including: Issues related to the First Amendment, privacy, and security; the relationship between old and new media; the challenge of accuracy in a 24/7 news cycle and the rapidly changing economics of the field. The base for the conference is George Mason University, with events planned at the National Press Club, the Newseum, the Kennedy Center, and the House of Representatives. While conference attendees represent high schools from all across the country, we are reserving a select number of spots for students in the Potomac and Chesapeake region. We invite you or your teachers to nominate your most deserving students. Nominees should be rising seniors, have strong academic records (with a minimum 3.5 GPA and/or be in the top 20% of their class), be of good character, and most importantly have a demonstrated interest and experience in journalism and media, and be exceptional representatives for their states and high schools. Your students will be notified of your nomination and will receive additional info on registering for the conference. Each school may nominate up to 3 students. It is designed to discuss the character and contributions of George Washington. It will explore how Washington's legacy of character and civic responsibility remain relevant in our modern world. Speakers include: Dr. Peter Henriques, author of "Realistic Visionary: Essays on the Life and Character of George Washington", and Kathleen Matthews, former anchor of ABC 7 News. Visitor Services recruits volunteers to work directly with visitors at the museum on the National Mall and Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. If you would like to volunteer for Educational Services at the National Air and Space Museum, opportunities are available for Behind-the Scenes support of programs as well as working directly with visitors in the How Things Fly Gallery, Discovery Stations, and the Docent Program. The Explainers program gives young adults (16+) a part-time paid work opportunity at the National Air and Space Museum. Explainers work at least two days each month during the school year (September to May) and up to four days during the summer. Explainers work weekend days as scheduled. Pay rate is competitive.
