Courses

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology offers courses in seven different languages: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian and Spanish. Click on any language below for the course description and texts used in the beginning and intermediate levels.

Credit: While providing excellent opportunities to improve oral proficiency in the target language, summer programs such as Concordia are not accepted as a substitute for the Level III program.

Placement: Freshmen entering TJ should not register for Levels IV or V without the previous approval of the Division Manager and formal evaluation.

Pass/Fail: Since three levels of foreign language study are a requirement to obtain either the TJ diploma or the Advanced Fairfax County HS diploma, they cannot be taken pass or fail.

Recommended sequence of courses: Click here to see a flowchart of recommended courses to follow.

Proficiency Standards: All students enrolled in any foreign language courses must meet the County Standards of oral and written proficiency to receive credit in any level.

Textbook loans: It is a TJ policy not to lend students any textbook before or after the academic school year. If a student wishes to purchase a textbook used in a language class, links to publishing companies are provided on the appropriate webpage for levels 1-3.
