The One Book selection for 2010 is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This novel will launch our discussion of the 2011-2012 One Question, "How can we, the TJ community, take action to help prepare students to confront difficult moral and ethical decisions, both now and in the future?", submitted by Andrew Martin.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks examines the bio-ethical conflict posed by the use of a patient.s DNA for medical research without her family.s permission. The intersection of these factors is still relevant in today.s debates over health care. The novel is non-fiction and based on the factual information that the author was able to acquire over many years of research and interviews.

2010-2011
The One Book selection for 2010 was Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. This novel launched our discussion of the 2010-2011 One Question, "How can we maintain our individuality and creativity in an increasingly impersonal and technological world?., submitted by Raynor Kuang. Brave New World is a classic work of science fiction portraying a future utopia where individuality is suppressed in favor of forced universal contentment. Readers will be intrigued at the fictional scientific advancements which Huxley imagined when he published the novel in 1932. (Many of these innovations are part of our life today.) 2009-2010
The One Book selection for 2009 summer reading is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Faculty and students who reviewed the nominated books particularly liked this non-fiction work on the impact of one man's sense of social responsibility.
This book lends itself well to the 2009-2010 One Question, "What are the social responsibilities of educated people?", submitted by Ian Ladner, and in fact highlights all four core principles and skills valued at TJ: Critical Inquiry and Research, Problem Solving, Intellectual Curiosity, Social Responsibility (CIRPSICSR).
