Chapter 5 of the Psychology textbook includes 4 main sections: Dreams, Sleep, Drugs and Hypnosis. This web page will cover all 4 sections comprehensively. This page was originally a project for Mrs. Hannah's AP Psych class, Period 1, 1997-98, as a mini
project for the second quarter. It is optimized for 800x600 Resolution and Netscape 4.0, and uses JavaScript and Java.

What does this page do for you?
If you're in a Psychology class of some sort, this page can help you study for a test on dreams, sleep, drugs and hypnosis. If you just want to learn about states of consciousness, this site is a rough outline of the whole subject. We suggest the use of
this site not by itself, but as an outline to help you find more information.

CONSCIOUSNESS: AN OVERVIEW
- Due to the growth of the cognitive approach to psychology, many textbooks now contain a separate chapter on consciousness.
- Today the study consciousness spans the waking states (i.e. perception, emotion, thinking), but also altered states of consciousness, such as sleep, dreaming, drug induced states, hypnosis and meditation.
- Consciousness: our awareness of the world and of ourselves.
- However, when we fall into an Altered State of Consciousness: a shift from our awareness in the normal waking state.
- Research on states of consciousness investigates two very different response
variables:
- Physiological Activity, that accompanies the conscious state.
- Subjective Report, of what is experienced during the state.
