There are several theories on motivation:

Biological Determinism
Hull’s Drive-Reduction Model
Cognitive Consistency Theory
Arousal Theory
Incentive Theory
Self Actualization

There are six items that motivate people in their actions these are:

HUNGER
AFFILIATION
ACHIEVEMENT
SEX
AGGRESSION
THIRST

Sometimes motives are in conflict with each other and one must decide what he/she wants to do.
