Language is a system of words, including meanings and rules for
combining words (Psychology, Benjamin, Hopkins, &
Nation) that allows people to communicate. This ability to
communicate through written and spoken word sets humans apart
from the rest of the animal kingdom. Today there are about
5,000 different languages in use through out the world.
Those who have studied the origins of language believe that
the first languages consisted of commands and nouns. Over time
simple words became combinations of words and finally complete
sentences. The number of words that comprised a language also
grew to include words for relationships and action. About
5,000 years ago the Sumerians began writing. This development
in language allowed information to be passed on from one
generation to the next. Language today is an integral
part of human life.
