Looking out your window in the spring, you smell
the air around you as you hear the chirping of the birds on the tree branches
above. You notice a mother robin feeding a worm to her babies.
The cool spring breeze caresses against your cheek. It is a beautiful
day outside, but did you ever once stop to interpret your own senses?
Welcome to The World of Perception!
Perception is the
process of organizing, interpreting, and selectively extracting sensory
information. In this web page, The World of Perception, we
will introduce you to basic concepts of perception as a whole, with a focus
on visual perception and optical illusions.
The image of the
dancing man above is a type of optical illusion. The man appears
to have spirals coming out of him. It appears as if the spirals are
moving smoothly and if you stare at the center, you might even get the
feeling that you were travelling down a corridor. Of course your
are not actually moving.
This apparent motion
is known as stroboscopic movement. In actuallity the sensation of
movement is produced by a succesive presentation of still images that follow
one another in a logical sequence. Motion pictures are made in this
way. Now continue on into the World of Perception and see what other
interesting phenomeni you may find!
