vestibular components

There is one vestibular system on each side of the head. Each side of this bilateral system consists of two types of sensors: semicircular canals and fluid-filled sacs, located in the inner ear. As shown in the image below, the three semicircular canals are located in positions ninety degrees around each other. They are responsible for sensing rotational movement. Two sac-like structures, the saccule and the utricle (called the otolith organs), sense linear movement. Each contains a specialized region which is made up of hair cells. The three semicircular canals are orthogonal with respect to each other and are continuous with the two otolith organs.
