The sense of smell occupies a very small segment of the human cerebral cortex, unlike other animals, most of which have a very keen sense of smell. This is due to the fact that, with the exception of humans, smell is usually the dominant sense. For humans, sense of smell isn't as important because we have no natural predators and we (usually) don't need to hunt for our food. Nevertheless, smell provides important information about our surroundings that many people take for granted. Only in the abscence of smell can one truly appreciate the usefulness of this undervalued sense. We will go into further detail, covering the topics of the trigeminal sense, anosmia, and pheromones, on the following pages.
